This thread is still under construction. I will gradually add more info. If you have links and info which would be useful please post it in a reply so that I can add it in. Im not an expert, im only posting up info that I have found and read on the net to make it easier to find. Any input from other members is appreciated...
I believe most Supra owners can be put into two categories. Those that have gone single, and those that want to go single. Its inevitable, most of us will end up doing the big single conversion. With the strong aussie dollar and availability of parts the conversions are becoming more and more popular as many would have noticed with the increase in "which turbo should I get" threads.
I am also planning a single conversion, and have been researching it for the past 6 months. For all you guys out there planning a single conversion, I cant stress how important research is. It can save you thousands of dollars! And by research I dont mean simply posting a thread hoping that everyone will answer your questions. Im talking about reading everything. Aussie forums, American Forums, UK forums.... the SEARCH function is your friend.
It does take alot of time to go through the thousands of threads on the forums looking for the answers to your questions, so out of the kindness of my heart I have decided to post this thread with alot of the research I have been doing into the single conversion. Its also to help me keep track of stuff that I have read so that I can go back and refer to it later.
There is heaps of info to put in here and I wont be doing it all at once, so expect updates with more info.
STEP 1 - WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO SINGLE?
Is it for show, is it for bragging rights, is it for track work, dyno or drags. By answering this question you will start to narrow down your options for turbos.
STEP 2 - HOW MUCH POWER DO YOU WANT?
How far do you want to go? What is your goal/target? Again the answer to this question will determine which turbo you go for. It will also effect what support mods you require. some people speak in KW some people speak in HP click for conversion.
STEP 3 - CHOOSING A TURBO
Choose the turbo to suit your application. Most of the popular turbos can be purchased as a kit, or you can buy all the parts separately which will probably save you money. The most popular turbos are Garrett GT30, Garrett GT35, Garrett GT3540, Garrett T04Z, HKS T04Z, HKS T51, Trust T67, Trust T78, Trust T88

Other things to keep in mind when choosing a turbo. Internal or external gate? the smaller turbos such as GT30s and GT35s are available with internal gates which means you dont have to purchase an additional waste gate. Most of the cheaper aftermarket manifolds that you can pick up online come with a T4 flange. Consider that when choosing your exhaust housing. If you have to change the flange on the manifold or get an adaptor again thats another expense.
The Garrett website has an excellent Tech section if you want to read up on all the technical terms <click>
The T04R website has an excellent feature which allows you to overlay dyno graphs from different cars. These guys are all running big HP setups and their Dynos always read alot higher than ours but it is a good comparison. <click>
STEP 4 - RESEARCH YOUR CHOSEN TURBO
Once you have chosen a turbo or narrowed it down to a short list, I have found the best way to research is to find someone with the same setup. Before you start sending heaps of pm's have a read through their threads as they may have already answered alot of your questions.
